Sustainable Eco Resort in Tonga

Living Lightly in Paradise

Experience off-grid island life in harmony with nature — powered by the sun, built from the land, sustained by care.

Our Mission for a Greener Future

At Fanifo Lofa, sustainability isn’t a trend — it’s our foundation. Our eco resort in Tonga was created from a deep respect for the land, ocean, and people who make Uoleva Island so special. Every part of the resort — from energy and water systems to food and construction — is designed to work with nature, not against it. By staying here, guests become part of a living example of sustainable resort practices in the South Pacific, helping preserve this pristine corner of Haʻapai for generations to come.

Discover Our Eco Ethos
Renewable Energy: Powered by Sun and Wind

Our solar-powered resort in Tonga runs entirely on renewable energy. Solar panels capture the tropical sun to provide clean power for lighting, refrigeration, and essential comforts. When the sea breeze blows strong, our wind turbine helps supplement energy production naturally. We monitor and balance our systems carefully to maintain a steady, reliable off-grid supply — proving that comfort and sustainability can coexist beautifully in a true off-grid eco retreat.

Water Systems: Harvested by Nature

Freshwater is precious on an island, so we rely entirely on rainwater harvesting on Uoleva to meet our needs. Large roof catchments collect rainfall, which is then filtered and stored in reservoirs. Guests can live knowing that every drop is responsibly sourced and managed with care. It’s island living in harmony with the elements.

Eco Construction: Built from the Island

Fanifo Lofa’s fales (bungalows) are decorated using materials found right here on Uoleva — coconut timber, local hardwood, coral sand, and woven palm thatch. We designed and built everything ourselves, ensuring minimal impact on the landscape and maximum natural airflow. Each structure blends into the island’s contours, creating a feeling of space, privacy, and connection to the land.

Waste & Toilets: Closing the Loop

When we first moved to Uoleva, we designed our own composting toilets — and they’re still going strong today. These systems turn natural waste into safe, compostable material that feeds our gardens, completing the circle of sustainability. Greywater from showers and sinks is filtered naturally through rocks, sand and soil, returning to the environment cleanly. It’s all part of our goal to live waste-free and leave no trace behind.

Sustainable Dining: From Garden to Table

Our meals are inspired by what the island and ocean provide. We grow much of our own produce in organic gardens — fresh herbs, tropical fruit, and vegetables — and source additional ingredients from local fishers and farmers. Dining at Fanifo Lofa means enjoying fresh, sustainable island cuisine.

Respecting the Wildlife

We share our island with whales, birds, and countless marine creatures — so we tread lightly. Our reef-safe practices include avoiding harmful chemicals, using biodegradable cleaning products, and guiding responsible whale swims that respect the natural behaviors of these majestic animals. Every guest who stays with us plays a role in protecting Tonga’s unique biodiversity.
